Don’t miss viewing 5 spectacular gardens on Saturday, June 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tours start at either the John Wornall House Museum or any of the gardens listed below. Tickets are just $15.00 in advance and $20.00 the day of the tour.
This year, the John Wornall House Museum Garden Tour, which is sponsored and underwritten by Commerce Bank, DST Systems, James B. Nutter and Co., Cassidy Turley Midwest, and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Huber, offers viewers a chance to visit 5 spectacular gardens. All gardens are located within a short driving distance of each other.
Gary Fabro and Mike Mead Garden, 408 W. 61st Terrace – This garden is a sweet urban spot that shows how even a small amount of space can provide respite and beauty. Meandering borders of lush plantings and a bubbling fountain help create a relaxing urban retreat and a pea gravel patio completes the trendy look. The owners frequently invite guests over, so they have dedicated a significant amount of space to entertaining.
Carol & Allen Hallquist Garden, #17 Janssen Place - This garden runs the gamut from mild to wild. The soothing, formal beauty of the front yard transitions slowly into an expansive back yard in a more natural tone. Climbing roses, sparkling fountains and raised vegetable gardens all share this area. The gardeners assistant is a sweet dog named Layla, who takes her position seriously and may even show you around her paradise.
Steve Metzler & Brian Williams Garden, 3724 Holmes St - “Our garden’s bones are English in nature with a touch of Charleston,” say the owners of this Janssen Place garden, platted on the larges lot in Central Hyde Park. This garden blooms throughout the spring and summer, and features many old-fashioned plantings. It features a “secret” garden, with urns and other ornaments, behind the garage.
George & Betsy Guastello Garden - The Guastello’s have created a truly inspired outdoor living area. In addition to a formal front yard garden, there is an extraordinary back patio dotted with antique mill stones, and “Fire Island”, which features a fireplace and grill. A small private garden off the master bedroom features a lovely water garden.
The Notre Dame de Sion Community Garden, 3625 Locust St. - The Notre Dame De Sion Community Garden was created in 2010as a result of parents’ desires to improve the hot lunch program. Highlighting a food garden is a first for the Wornall House Garden Tour, but we recognize the importance of the burgeoning community food-growing movement. Vegetable gardens can be very beautiful, and they can address nutrition, obesity and care of the environment in a positive way. That’s why we believe this local, school-run garden is something everyone should see.
Along with the 5 gardens mentioned above, any one who purchases a ticket will also be allowed to stroll through the historic John Wornall House Museum herb garden for free, which started in 1975. It is carefully maintained by a dedicated group of volunteer gardeners. A special Garden / Local Artist Shop will also be set up on the Museum lawn. It will be the host to specialty gardening and other local vendors from throughout the region.
