Our lovely herb garden is open year round. Casual visitors are welcome at any time to walk and enjoy the herbs. The mission of our herb garden is to promote the knowledge of herbs used in a variety of ways on the Missouri frontier. Herbs had many uses on the 1850’s farm. Herbs and plants were important medicinally as knowledge of germs was not gained until later. Herbs also had culinary and olfactory purposes. Commercially produced flavorings and air fresheners were not available, so both the flavor and scent of herbs were popular. Herbs were grown in the summer, usually in a garden close to the kitchen. They were used fresh while available, but in the fall were harvested and dried for use through the winter.
